Lois Beachler dies at her home

An 89-year-old grandmother died after a fire Thursday afternoon at her Westerville home.

Westerville city spokesperson Christa Dickey said Lois Beachler was the owner and sole occupant of the ranch-style home, which is located at 276 Brisbane Ave., between Pointview Drive and Barcelona Avenue, a little over a block west of Huber Village Park.

Westerville firefighters were called around 5:50 p.m. Thursday on a report of a fire that appeared to have started in the living room of the 1,730-square-foot ranch home, Dickey said.

According to a 911 call, a neighbor arrived back at their home and noticed smoke coming from Beachler’s garage. Neighbors attempted to get inside the home, but the exterior doors were locked, according to the call.

Beachler was found by firefighters in the living room. She was pronounced dead at the scene, Dickey said.

The cause of Beachler’s death remains under investigation, as does the cause of the fire, which Dickey said is considered to be accidental at this time.

Beachler bought the home in 1981, according to Franklin County auditor records.

Dickey said there were working smoke detectors inside the home at the time of the fire.
